The Golden Temple

The abode of Bliss and Blessings, The Golden Temple is holiest of the shrines of Sikh religion. Guru Arjun Dev requested the great contemporary Muslim saint Mian Meer to lay the foundation stone of this shrine in January 1589, thus the building was completed in 1601 and the Holy Scripture of Sikhs Adi Granth was installed in Temple in 1604.

Surrounded by the pool which gave the town its name "Amritsar", Golden Temple is open to all and is reached by a causeway. The temple beautifully reflected in stunning expanse of water, creates an atmosphere which is particularly powerful from before dawn to early light. At this time the glistening white marble walk-way Parikarma which surrounds the temple is still cold under feet and the gold begins to shimmer in lightening water.

 
Jallian Wala Memorial
In 1919, The Jallianwala Bagh was no "garden but a desolate piece of land- a rectangle of irregular shape, about 229 meters long and 13 meters wide.The 'Flame of liberty' was constructed in 1954 and inaugurated by the President, Dr Rajindra Parsad in 1961. On the four sides of the memorial, the words, "In memory of martyrs-13 April,1919" has been inscribed in Hindi, Punjabi,Urdu and English.
Wagha Border

People visit this place in large numbers to witness the lowering down of the flags of both countries. The only post, where a special parade is  organised to lower the flags simultaneously from the flag poles in the evening,beams with activity. The flag lowering ceremony, better known as the 'Retreat' is performed everyday, Shortly before sunset, by Border Security Force (BSF) jawans on the Indian side and Pakistan Rangers on the other side.

For the people of both the countries, it is a major event and hundred of Pak and Indian nationals assemble at their respective sides to watch the parade. The rush on the Indian side is heavy on Sundays while the Pakistani side is crowded on Fridays . The VIP's of both countries also make sure that don't miss the opportunity to see the jawans perform a drill together.

 
Durgiana Temple
Situated outside the Hathi Gate Durgiana Mandir is largest Hindu Temple in the city. This temple is devoted to goddess Durga and dates back to 16th century. A famous Hindu Shrine it was founded by Lala Nathu Mal Rangwala and Guru Sahai Mal in 1921. There are other temples Durga Mata Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Bairon Mandir inside the Complex. Shri Ram Nassen of Lahore in 1905 constructed a Sarover. In 1921 a bridge measring 250 feet is length and 181/2 feet is width was constructed to reach the major shrine adoring the idols of Shri Laxmi Narayan, Sita and Ram, Radha and Krishna. These idols are beautifull draped and profusely ornamented. All the dignitarias visiting Golden Temple make a point to visit Durgiana temple also.
 
Gobind garh Fort
The fort occupied a unique place in the Indian military history. Built in 1760, it was called Bhangian Da Kila (Bhangis was one of the twelve Sikh misles). According to historians, during 1808, the fort was known as the fort of Gujjar Singh Bhangi. Later it was re-built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh with the help of Jodh Singh. The legendary Maharaja strengthened the fortification of the fort in order to keep his treasures and treaties in safety. The specially constructed Toshakhana, in the centre of the fort, also stored large amount of grains and provisions for the 12,000-strong army. The fort was constructed with brick and lime with numerous army bastions and iron gates with 25 cannons on the ramparts, now replaced with modern weaponry. The fort was constructed on a square pattern with a parameter of 1500 sq mt with two strong gates, four large bastions and well-defined rampart.
 
Mata Mandir
A grand old pious lady developed this Hindu temple situated at Rani ka Bagh , on the lines of holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi at Katra(Jammu),the temple draws crowds of devotees from far and near. Festivals are celebrated with great pomp and show. An evening visit to the temple gives an opportunity to the visitors to observe the life styles of Hindu families.
Ram Tirath
On the outskirts of Amritsar this is a significant historic place. The place gets a special mention in the great Hindu epic "Ramayana". On return, after great victory of Lanka when Lord Rama deserted Mata Sita on hearsay, she came to this place, the seat of great saint Maharishi Valmiki who gave her shelter and protection. It was at this place that Mata Sita gave birth to twins "Luv"and "Kush"the great sons of Lord Rama. Maharishi Valmiki conducted them to highest levels in education in the realms of religious and social life besides intricacies of warfare. A suitable temple is erected to commemorate the event.
